VOLUNTARY PRE-KINDERGARTEN (VPK)
VPK Childcare Program
What is VPK?
Florida’s Voluntary Prekindergarten Education Program or VPK is a free educational program that prepares 4-year-olds for kindergarten and beyond. Children must live in Florida and be 4 on or before September 1 of the school year they enroll. VPK is a 540 hour program offered throughout the school year.
DATES and TIMES
The Florida Free VPK hours are 8:30-12 Monday – Thursday and 8:30-11 on Fridays. Wrap-around care covers care for before and after those times.
Jelly Bean Junction’s VPK program follows the Brevard County School Board’s calendar.
How do I get a VPK certificate?
Parents may go to the Early Learning Coalition of Brevard‘s Website to get information on how to register for voluntary pre-kindergarten and on what documents are needed to obtain a VPK Certificate. Once parents obtain their VPK Certificate, they may bring it to our school in order to hold their child’s place in our program. Visit ELC Website for more information:
What else should I know?
The state of Florida requires every VPK Program to administer the VPK Assessment to each child three times a year. There are four assessment measures: Print Knowledge, Phonological Awareness, Mathematics and Oral Language/Vocabulary.The first assessment is used as a baseline for the teachers so they can teach according to strengths and weaknesses of each individual child. After the second assessment, we hold parent conferences to discuss how their child is progressing. There are Nooks in each of our VPK classrooms for children to work on educational apps focusing on the areas that are assessed on the VPK Assessment. VPK state ratio is 11 students to 1 teacher.
We will also hold a VPK Orientation Night before the beginning of the school year for all families enrolled to ensure all your questions are answered when it comes to knowing you made the right decision by choosing Jellybean Junction for VPK!
